What You'll Do as a CIT
As a Counselor in Training, you'll be at the heart of the action—supporting campers, leading activities, and gaining invaluable hands-on experience.

What is the program fee and what does it cover?
The CIT program requires a $150 per week investment. This fee covers the application process, comprehensive training (both prior to and during camp), supplies, and program overhead. Exceptional CITs who demonstrate strong leadership and skills may be invited to join our paid staff team after the summer program concludes.
How many hours per week is the commitment?
CITs are expected to commit to the full week from 9 AM to 3 PM each day, Monday through Friday, and commit to at least 2 weeks of camp during the summer. The exact schedule and additional details will be shared during the application process and provided to accepted applicants.
Does the program count for volunteer hours and college applications?
Eligible CIT participants may be able to count verified service hours toward NHS requirements, depending on their school's chapter policies. We provide signed verification and supervisor documentation, but final approval is made by each school. Hours can also be included in college or scholarship applications.
Can CIT participants request references for college applications?
Yes! CITs who complete the program successfully can request letters of recommendation from Genius Gems mentors. These letters highlight your leadership skills, dedication, and contributions to the program.
What happens after the summer program ends?
CITs who excel during the summer may be invited to join Genius Gems as paid part-time associates, helping with after-school programs, weekend events, or future summer sessions. This provides ongoing leadership experience and income opportunities.
Where is the program located?
The CIT program takes place in Millburn, New Jersey. Full day camp sessions are held at CBI (160 Millburn Avenue, Millburn, NJ 07041), and our half day program is located at Genius Gems Millburn (215 Millburn Avenue, Millburn, NJ 07041). This is an onsite commitment, so participants should be able to travel to and from these Millburn locations regularly throughout the summer.
What should CITs bring each day?
CITs are responsible for packing their own lunch, water, and snacks for each day of the program. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and nutritious snacks to keep your energy up throughout the day while working with campers.
